Consumed by jungle and time, very little is known about this temple ruin but it is believed this stone monument was once an ancient hermitage, a meditation retreat for elite monks or a sanctuary for sacred manuscripts. Located near the northwest corner of the holy reservoir of East Baray, deep inside the Angkor Archaeological Park, it was designed and constructed by King Jayavarman VII during the late 12th century.

The present name of Ta Nei refers to one of the informal caretakers who lived on site in the mid-20th century during French explorations

Ta Nei appears to have been part of a broader network of religious and administrative sites, acting as a quiet satellite temple to the more prominent temples of Preah Khan and Ta Prohm. Though now secluded and vastly reclaimed by nature, scattered masonry and traces of stone foundations found in the area hints at a once thriving settlement. Historians also believe that a royal residence may have been located in this part of the park.

The temple follows the Bayon architectural style and was likely dedicated to the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara. Its structure includes a central sanctuary, four corner towers and two libraries. Unlike many other temples in the Angkor complex, its outer enclosure wall was never completed. The temple contains carvings of Buddhist iconography and weathered scenes from religious texts. Most of the original statues are now missing, presumed lost, looted or swallowed by the forest.

Etched into the ancient sandstone are scenes that trace the deep arc of Buddhist history, echoes of stories still told today in the vibrant murals of Theravada pagodas across Southeast Asia. Among these sacred carvings are glimpses of Prince Siddhartha Gautama, the man who would become the Buddha. They capture his fateful choice to renounce royal privilege in search of enlightenment, a moment of profound sacrifice that has inspired generations. Interwoven with these are the Jataka tales: moral parables from the Buddha’s past lives, portraying him as kings, animals, sages and warriors, each story revealing timeless lessons of compassion, humility and resolve.

Rediscovered and partially cleared in the 20th century, the temple has remained largely untouched by modern restoration, save for a few structural reinforcements to stave off complete collapse. It's crumbling walls and lichen-covered pediments are now mostly obscured by the jungle.
