Nestled within the jungle landscapes of Gianyar Regency, Goa Rang Reng Waterfall offers an harmonious blend of natural beauty and cultural significance. Unlike Bali's more frequented falls, this secluded spot remains a hidden gem, for now. Located roughly 30 minutes from downtown Ubud, the journey to these falls meanders through traditional villages and lush rice paddies.
Contrary to belief, the wall carvings are not at all ancient or old. The locals created these gorgeous works of art to occupy their time during covid!

"Rang Reng" does not have a direct translation but it is believed to represent a symbolic duality , something both beautiful and fearsome
Beyond its natural allure of multi-tiered cascades, Rang Reng holds a revered place in Balinese spirituality. At the summit of the falls lies a cave that is integral to local purification rituals, known as "melukat". Balinese Hindus frequent this site to cleanse themselves of negative energies, believing the confluence of two rivers here enhances the waters sanctity.
Local lore attributes the cave to Kebo Iwa, a legendary figure renowned for his supernatural abilities. He was tasked with redirecting the rivers flow to irrigate the southern regions of the island. Demonstrating his immense strength and powers, he is said to have carved the cave using only his hands in a single night. Marks resembling finger impressions on the cave walls are believed to be evidence of his monumental effort.

While walking through this particular jungle, I definitely felt a dark energy in the trees. Not evil, but heavy
Location : Jalan Goa Jalan Razng Reng, Bakbakan. Gianyar Regency
How to get there : I found the easiest and cheapest way to get here was with a private Go-Gek scooter rider, from Ubud. It took about 30 minutes to reach the entry to the falls. A half day tour of the waterfalls in the area cost me roughly 250,000 IDR.
Attraction Info : The falls are open from 6am to 6pm every day of the year (except on Nyepi). The entrance fee is 20,000 IDR. Bring cash, as there are no ATM's nearby. Early morning is the best time to experience the falls in solitude, as few tourists arrive before mid-morning. The rainy season (November–March) brings a stronger flow to the waterfall, making it even more dramatic. The path can be slippery, so caution is advised and there are many steps down to the river. It is reasonably safe to swim here but be mindful of the current, as this is a strong waterfall. Make sure you bring a change of clothes and a towel.
If you are interested in experiencing a Melukat Ritual, you can ask a local guide at the ticket counter to organise this for you. While I didn't partake in one while I was here, they will cost between 20,000 for a basic ceremony to 1,000,000 IDR for something more elaborate.
