Tucked away in the lush jungles of central Bali, Timbumana Waterfall is a serene escape that feels like stepping into a forgotten world. Unlike the more famous waterfalls of Bali, this hidden gem near Ubud remains relatively untouched, offering visitors a peaceful retreat surrounded by nature’s raw beauty.

Located about 30 minutes from Ubud, Timbumana Waterfall is easily accessible but still feels secluded. The first glimpse of Timbumana is breathtaking, a slender veil of water cascading over a moss-covered cliff into a crystal-clear pool below. Towering rock walls and dense foliage enclose the area, creating an almost cathedral-like atmosphere where nature reigns supreme. Timbumana is gentle and inviting, making it perfect for a refreshing dip or quiet reflection.

Beyond its cascading waters lies a deeper connection to Bali’s mystical past, one woven with legends of spirits, gods & the sacred energy that flows through the island.
Like many of Bali’s natural wonders, it is believed to be a sacred site, infused with spiritual energy. Locals whisper of ancient spirits that guard the falls, ensuring the balance between the seen and unseen worlds. One legend tells of Dewi Danu, the Balinese goddess of lakes and rivers, who is said to bless the waters of Timbumana. According to myth, these waters are infused with her energy, offering purification and renewal to those who enter.
Another tale speaks of a wandering sage or respected priest, who meditated near Timbumana centuries ago. Seeking enlightenment, he was drawn to the falls by a divine vision. It is said that after days of deep meditation beside the cascading water, he received wisdom from the spirits of the jungle. To this day, some Balinese priests visit the falls in secret, performing silent offerings to honour the spirits that dwell there.

Many Balinese people believe the falls to be a gateway between the physical and spiritual worlds, making it a site for quiet contemplation rather than adventure tourism.
Location : Jalan Setra Agung, Apuan, Kec. Sust, Kapuaten, Bangli
How to get there : I found the easiest and cheapest way to get here was with a private Go-Gek scooter rider, from Ubud. It took about 40 minutes to reach the entry to the falls. A half day tour of the waterfalls in the area cost me roughly 250,000 IDR and I also offered my rider lunch.
Attraction Info : The falls are open from 6am to 6pm every day of the year (except on Nyepi). The entrance fee is just 10,000 IDR, with an additional 5,000 IDR if you want a locker in the changing rooms. Cash is preferred however they do have eftpos facilities at the ticket booth. Early morning is the best time to experience the falls in solitude, as few tourists arrive before mid-morning. The rainy season (November–March) brings a stronger flow to the waterfall, making it even more dramatic. The path can be slippery, so caution is advised. It is safe to swim here, make sure you bring a change of clothes and a towel
